Dancing in the Rain - A Mount Holly Family Photo Session at Smithville Park

August 12, 2020  •  1 Comment

This time last year, when things were very different in the world, I had a call from a lovely lady who wanted some family photos in a garden setting.  We made our plans for Historic Smithville Mansion in Mount Holly, New Jersey.  Not only was the location convenient for all of us, but their gardens are hard to beat.  The day of the session was cloudy with mixed reviews from all the weather apps about the possibility of rain, but every app said the rain would be starting later, so we decided to go ahead.

Things started out so well, we got some family poses done at our first location and started into some shots of these cuties.

And then ....

Yes, the rain started to fall!  We were on a covered porch so we thought it would be best to wait it out, and of course we still took some photos while we waited.  And the kids had a fine time playing with bubbles.  I don't think they minded the rain one bit.

Eventually we realized we were going to be there a while.  Our apps were all wrong.  We were on that porch for almost an hour and it rained like crazy.  We all debated whether to make a run for it, but none of us wanted to get quite that wet.

Except maybe this guy.  Arthur had no qualms about getting that wet, can't you tell?

We finally got off the porch when the rain slowed to a drizzle, and said we'd reschedule the second half of the session another time.  It took almost a year, but we finally managed to find a day to try again.  This time, due to COVID19 issues, we opted to skip the park and take the photos at the family home, also right in Mount Holly.  Their beautiful flower gardens and historic home made a perfect backdrop, and guess what?  No rain!!

I really enjoyed seeing how the kids had grown over the last year and as much as I loved the rainy day photos, I definitely am glad we were able to come back and enjoy a drier photo experience the second time around.

We ended the session with some ukuleles - I can't think of a better way to end a session, can you?

I'm so thankful to have clients like these, who are good sports under pressure and so much fun.  They're super cute too, but you can see that for yourself, right?  If you'd like a photographer who will entertain you while you wait out a rain storm on a porch, drop me a line!  I'll bring the bubbles and some corny jokes, you just bring yourself and your best smiles.  I look forward to dancing in the rain with you.
